Brackfield Consulting have extensive experience of providing major contractors with design support to their temporary works responsibilities. Temporary works is a fundamental requirement of the vast majority of construction projects including even small scale domestic work. Our primary focus with such work is on Health and Safety and on developing full understanding with the permanent works design team and project coordinators.
Safety, Health & Welfare at work (Construction) Regulations require that temporary works designs are responsibly discharged. Such design, along with the Contractor method statement, is coordinated by a PSDP who would normally control his own duties by the use of ‘Temporary Works Design Certificates’.
Under the Regulations, a Designer is required to communicate in writing all relevant health and safety information. This is usually controlled by the writing of designer risk assessments and this process applies to temporary as well as permanent works designs.
The professional bodies (ACEI/RIAI/SCS/EI) advise that tender documents should provide that the Main Contractor shall engage a competent Temporary Works Designer who shall take overall design responsibility for the stability of the structure during the envisaged construction process.
